Inside Jayson Tatum’s Christian faith from giant tattoos to powerful life motto about Jesus

Jayson Tatum is undoubtedly one of the NBA’s biggest stars.

At just 25 years old, he’s already a four-time NBA All-Star and was named the Eastern Conference Finals MVP in 2022.

Despite his remarkable success, Tatum has remained incredibly humble thanks to his firm Christian faith.

As stated on the Celtics star’s website: ‘Jayson gives all the glory to God for his skills, talent and the platform he has been blessed to have through playing basketball.’

His favorite scripture is Philippians 4:13 which states, “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.”

Jayson Tatum’s life motto about Jesus

To keep faith at the center of his daily life, Tatum came up with a motto that’s front and center on all his social media accounts:

‘In Jesus Name I play’.

When asked about the significance behind his motto on the Faith on the Field podcast, Tatum explained:

“That’s something that has stuck with me for a long time. I even got it tattooed on my wrist.

“From a young age, my grandmother was the first one to always remind me how blessed I am to be in this position and the talents that I have.

“And to make sure that everything you do, you do it for Jesus.”

The NBA superstar went on to talk about how faith has helped him to remain grounded despite his remarkable success:

“It helps me a lot. Actually, that’d be an understatement. My grandma always told me, remember where you came from and to whom much is given, much is required.

“That’s always stuck with me. She told me to never be arrogant, always be humble no matter how far the game of basketball takes you.”

Jayson Tatum’s tattoos about his faith

Tatum has some of the most striking faith tattoos in the world of sports.

The most prominent of them all is the giant tattoo at the top of his back that reads ‘God’s will’, with reference to Proverbs 3: 5-6 printed just underneath.

Those bible verses talk in particular about putting your trust in God:

‘Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.’

Aptly, running through the center of Tatum’s ‘God’s will’ tattoo is an image of Jesus on the cross.

The ultimate picture of God’s will. That God sent his only son to die to save sinners.

A truth that Tatum holds close to his heart.
