England stars who have spoken about their Christian faith

Being called up to play for your country is the pinnacle for any footballer.

The pride of putting on your nation’s colours for the first time is often referred to by players as their career highlight.

Here are the England stars who’ve had the privilege of being called up to the latest squad by Gareth Southgate and have previously used their platform to speak openly about their Christian faith:

Bukayo Saka

Bukayo Saka has become one of the first names on Gareth Southgate’s team sheet.

His stunning performances at the 2022 World Cup saw the Arsenal star score twice in England’s opener against Iran, before going on to net in the last 16 tie against Senegal and pick up an assist against France in the Quarters.

In the post-match press conference after England’s win against Senegal, the 21-year-old was asked about whether he’d been reading the bible during his stay in Qatar:

“Yeah, I’ve been continuing to do that out here. I read my Bible every night.

“For me, it’s really important to have the presence of God in me all the time and it gives me more confidence to know that God’s plan is perfect, so I can go on the pitch and know that God has my back.

“But the main thing for me is just keeping my faith.

You know just having faith in God so I don’t need to be nervous or worry about any outcomes because obviously, it’s my first World Cup.

You know I can start worrying about different things and different outcomes, but instead, I just choose to put my faith in God.”

Saka also appeared on British GQ’s ’10 Things I Can’t Live Without’ show, where he talked about the importance of the bible in his life and relying on God’s word:

Marc Guehi

Marc Guehi was called up to the England senior team for the very first time in March 2022.

The Palace star went on to make his debut in a 2-1 victory over Switzerland at Wembley.

In an interview with The Athletic, Marc Guehi revealed how after growing up in a Christian household, his faith still plays a major role in his life:

“I’ve grown up loving God and when I have had the chance I still go to church with my family, and my faith is definitely a big part of my life.

“Faith is everything that I’m involved with, really; even in football, where I’m trying to be a role model and show God’s graciousness and God’s glory through my life.”

Ivan Toney

Ivan Toney was first called up for England’s Nations League games against Italy and Germany in September 2022.

The 26-year-old has previously opened up about how he prays before every game:

“As a Christian, I always pray before the game.

“My nan has a little prayer that she always said to me before matches – so I do it every game now.”

Ivan Toney also gave glory to God after his hat-trick against Leeds in 2022:

In May 2021, Eze was called up to the senior England squad for the first time, as part of Gareth Southgate’s 33-man provisional squad for Euro 2020.

The Crystal Palace star was quick to display his faith for all to see, using his fingers to make a cross sign, pointing to his saviour Jesus Christ.

Every believer should not be afraid to express their faith in GOD and JESUS in public. And doing the grace before for example a meal or a task to thank the almighty for everything he has provided us to accomplish something. That’s important no matter how big and famous we are, in front of GOD and JESUS we are all small and equal. Amen.

  2. what a wonderful witness Gareth and the boys are … Jesus shines through them .. and looks down from heaven with a wonderful smile for you all .. God bless the World as His Kingdom comes …
